- Geopolitical sensitivity. Land corridors cross several countries; a political decision or a border closure can change the routing, the transit time and the cost. That is the main risk to factor in.
- Restricted goods. Much of dangerous goods, some lithium batteries, certain food products and frost-sensitive items do not travel, or not everywhere.
- Arrival. A train that reaches Europe quickly but whose devanning and clearance take a week loses part of its advantage. That is the point to lock down.
What to lock down at the arrival end
The transit time advertised on a rail service is often terminal to terminal. The question that matters is the European leg: where is the container stripped, who clears it, and how long before the goods are on your dock?
