In order to facilitate trade while strengthening the reliability of global supply chains, the World Customs Organization (WCO) has established the concept of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO). In this context, we will explore in detail what AEO status means, how to acquire it, and the benefits it provides to companies that hold this recognition.

The OAS is an international recognition attesting that a company meets the rigorous standards of customs compliance and security. Its main objective is to strengthen collaboration between customs authorities and economic actors, by establishing a partnership built on mutual trust.

To obtain AEO status, businesses must meet strict criteria established by the WCO as well as national customs authorities. Requirements may vary from country to country, however, in general, businesses need to prove financial stability, compliance with customs regulations, compliance history, and commitment to supply chain security.

The advantages of the OAS are multiple. They include simplifying customs procedures, prioritizing processing within these processes, accreditation of credibility and professionalism in international trade, and access to programs that provide additional benefits in terms of security, compliance, and international recognition.

All links in the international supply chain are eligible for AEO status, regardless of their size: whether they are importers, exporters, transporters, logisticians, airport entities responsible for the transit and temporary storage of cargo, or even customs and transport agents.

To obtain AEO status, it is strongly recommended to appoint an AEO manager within the company. This person will be responsible for overseeing the self-assessment, defining a timeframe for compiling the case, serving as a point of contact with customs during the audit, and ensuring ongoing compliance with obligations related to this status. The Business Advisory Unit (CCE) within the Economic Action Center (PAE) of the Regional Customs Directorate is available to support companies throughout this process.
