Freight forwarder in India: importing from India to France

To import from India to France, start with the supplier's location, shipment volume, cargo ready date and Incoterm. Request a door-to-door quote that covers pickup, freight, Indian export formalities, French import clearance and delivery. A forwarder with teams in India can coordinate suppliers and documents at origin. OVRSEA has five offices in India and a local customs team.

To import from India to France, first locate the supplier and confirm when the goods will be ready. These details determine pickup, the departure port or airport and the transport mode. Ask for a quote covering the whole journey, export formalities in India and import clearance in France. The practical question for a forwarder is who will follow up in India if the supplier, documents or booking change.

Which transport mode should I choose from India to France?

OptionWhen to consider itWhat to check in the quote
Air freightUrgent replenishment or a small, high-value shipmentChargeable weight, departure airport, final delivery and product restrictions
Ocean groupage (LCL)Volume too small for a full containerConsolidation point, groupage cut-off, destination charges and delivery
Full container (FCL)Higher volume or a need to control loadingFactory pickup, stuffing, departure port, origin charges and free time on arrival

LCL means several shippers share a container; FCL reserves a container for one shipper. Compare the options from the same cargo ready date to the same delivery address. A port-to-port price may exclude inland pickup in India, customs and the final leg. See the LCL versus FCL guide for the trade-offs.

Where in India are the goods collected?

OVRSEA has five offices in India: Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Cochin. Depending on the factory address, goods may travel to a port on the west or east coast, or leave by air. A city on an invoice is not enough to plan collection: provide the loading address, the place where the goods will be available and the party allowed to release them to the carrier.

Origin situationQuestion for the forwarder
Factory near Mumbai or GujaratWhich export port and inland route are proposed?
Suppliers across several regionsWhere will the lots meet, and who checks them before loading?
Urgent cargo from north or south IndiaWhich airport, pickup plan and final delivery date are quoted?

OVRSEA’s own teams coordinate operations across its Indian network, without an intermediary agent for those offices. Spell out the actual service in the quote: collection, consolidation, export customs, booking and exception handling.

How can I consolidate several Indian suppliers?

Buyer’s consolidation combines orders from several suppliers before shipment. It can make a regular flow easier to manage and improve container utilization. It also adds a step: each lot must reach the consolidation point, quantities must be checked and the shipment may have to wait for the last supplier.

Ask where goods will be received, what checks are included, who collects documents from each supplier and when the last lot must arrive. OVRSEA’s Indian network can coordinate this work and arrange warehousing through partners; the quote should name the site and services actually proposed. A single LCL shipment may be simpler when factories are far apart or one order is urgent.

Which documents should be checked before export from India?

The core file includes the commercial invoice, packing list, product details needed for customs classification, the agreed Incoterm and the parties’ details. Add any licence, certificate or inspection required for the product. The Indian supplier should confirm its ability to export: India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade describes the Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) and exceptions.

For entry into the European Union, the European Commission explains how the EORI number identifies economic operators. The French importer should also confirm the product’s tariff classification and any product-specific requirements. OVRSEA has a customs team in India; ask separately who will prepare the import declaration in France.

How should I compare India-France freight forwarder quotes?

ItemWhat should be specified
ScopePickup address, port or airport, customs clearance and delivery address
IncotermVersion and named place, with costs and risks allocated clearly
DepartureCargo ready date, proposed frequency and booking conditions
Origin chargesInland transport, handling, documents, consolidation or storage
ArrivalPossible deconsolidation, customs declaration, taxes and final delivery
Follow-upContacts at origin and destination, exception alerts and document access

An Incoterm allocates obligations between seller and buyer; it does not replace an itemized transport price. Use the Incoterms 2020 guide to check the arrangement. For a first quote, send the factory address, package count, dimensions and weight, product, value, ready date, Incoterm and delivery address. OVRSEA combines a tracking platform with teams in India and France; ask how the shipment and its documents will be followed.

FAQ

How do I choose a freight forwarder for imports from India?

Choose a forwarder that can identify who collects the goods in India, handles export formalities and passes the information to the customs representative in France. Compare door-to-door quotes based on the same Incoterm, pickup address and service scope. OVRSEA has offices in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Cochin, with a customs team in India.

Can I combine orders from several Indian suppliers?

Yes. Buyer's consolidation brings shipments from several suppliers together before departure when their ready dates allow it. Ask where consolidation takes place, who checks each shipment and what inland pickup costs. The right choice depends on volume, factory locations and the required delivery date.

Which documents do I need to import from India into France?

Ask the supplier for a commercial invoice, packing list, product information for customs classification and any product-specific documents. The Indian exporter should check whether an Importer-Exporter Code is required. The importer in France needs an EORI number for customs operations.

Should I use ocean or air freight from India?

Air freight suits urgent or smaller shipments when its cost is justified by the goods' value. Ocean freight suits larger volumes or more flexible schedules; less-than-container-load shipping lets several shippers share a container. Compare door-to-door dates and total costs before deciding.
